God doesn’t always give us the map, but He always offers the next step.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." – Psalm 119:105
Reflection:
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me, "What does God want me to do?" I could fund scholarships and build entire schools. It's one of the most sincere, vulnerable questions a believer can ask.
It speaks to a heart that wants to be faithful, that wants to walk in God’s will.
The challenge? Discernment is often between two good things. It's not choosing between robbing a bank or going to church; it’s between marriage or ministry, staying or going, this job or that opportunity. All are good. But to say yes to one means saying no to another. That’s why discernment is a Spirit-led process.
We begin with surrender: Lord, I give You my heart.
We place the process under the Lordship of Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Then we listen.
Discernment isn't magic. It takes time. Patience. Stillness. And trust in God’s timing, which (if we’re honest) often feels slower than we’d like. But through it, the Spirit speaks, in whispers, in peace, in counsel, and sometimes in discomfort.
You don’t have to discern alone:
-
Seek the wise counsel of those walking with Christ.
-
Pray through your options. Commit to one path in prayer for a few days. Then do the same with the other. Ask: Where do I feel peace? What stirs joy, or anxiety?
Discernment requires us to slow down, pay attention, and listen for peace in the direction that honors God, aligns with His Word, and is consistent with our season of life.
Eventually, we must take a step. Not a leap into the unknown, but a step into trust. God doesn’t promise a spotlight a mile ahead. He promises to light your next step.
Reflection Questions:
-
What good choices are you discerning between right now?
-
Where do you feel peace? Where do you feel pressure?
-
Are you giving your heart and timing to the Lord, or trying to control the process?
Prayer:
Holy Spirit, I invite You to guide me. Help me to listen for peace, seek wise counsel, and trust in Your perfect timing. Let me not be paralyzed by fear but led by faith. Light my next step, and help me walk in obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
